With the rising price of gas and food and sandwiches, I've seen a couple of trends rising as well.
1. Folding bikes. I'm seeing a lot more of these downtown than in years past. I'm not sure why. They look like the clown cars of the bicycle world. On the other hand, they look fun. And, the sheer dorkiness of them disqualifies you from the bike douche category, so that's a plus.
I occasionally fantasize about getting one, but I think it'll sit in the garage collecting dust like the other, normal bike I have. Also, it seems the maximum weight capacity is 220 lb, and I beat that if I'm carrying any gear with me.
2. Urban homesteading. SFGate was all over it this week with an article about a service that plants and maintains a vegetable garden in your backyard and another about raising chickens and pigs in your backyard.
The idea appeals to the post-apocalyptic living-off-the-grid side of me, but my vegetable options are limited in the Richmond. On the other hand, Steve loves broccoli and spinach almost exclusively.
I'm thinking of making this self-watering planter and giving it a whirl this summer.
