A spirited debate

about men complimenting women they don't know in public. In short: the women find it unpleasant and the men insist some women do welcome these comments delivered in an appropriate fashion. I think they both got a point.

But, I'm with the women. I don't care how innocent his intentions are. I hate it for exactly the reason Matisse states: that you're busy with thoughts in your head and some random stranger is trying to have a moment with you. I hate it especially because I'm at my most introverted when I'm walking by myself, pondering my place in time, the passing of the seasons, the 2nd layer of meaning of this song on my iPod, what's for dinner, and some dude wants to make some kind in-road with me by commenting on the most trivial part of me. I know it's meant to be a compliment, but it feels so much like a pat on the head.

And, the dude in question is usually approaching 50 and wearing a Members Only jacket. And then, I get cynical because, why would a 50-year-old man in a Members Only jacket think a 20-something woman wants to talk to him? Is it because I'm Asian and we reputedly dig pudgy old dudes twice our age?
