I utterly marvel at the Web.

When I was young lass, I struck up a conversation with one Ryan Gentles (I don't remember how we met... NO WAIT, I DO! He was a webmaster at an online music store and I was looking for a Weezer import EP. One of us had IM'd each other) and he said he was in a band and I asked him if they had a CD and he said Yup. "Send me that puppy," I said. "What?!" he said, "You don't even know what we sound like!" I replied, "I've paid far more for bad music."

The band was the Selzers and they could play a catchy tune. I was really into them and I thought they would go places. I even wrote up a little review for them for my college's gawd-awful newspaper, which I believe they put in their press kit.

I thought the Selzers would go places, but they didn't. They broke up and never toured the West coast, which I was really bummed about. I'm not entirely sure what the other guys are up to, but Ryan went on to become the manager of, I can't even believe it, radio darling The Strokes.

So, why do I even care about all of this for a guy I had maybe 5 sparse online conversations with? I found out that he, as manager of the Strokes, has spawned a fan community on LiveJournal. Like, "here's a new pic of Ryan" & "Ryan touched my shoulder to scoot pass me at last Wednesday's show!!" kind of fan community.

Not that Ryan isn't deserving of legions of fans; he was always a nice and personable guy when I had spoken with him. But, man, the manager of a band having an online fan page?
